Saturday, January 17 -  Diversity Forum

Chief Ricky Boren, Chamber president Michael Gaymon, Department of Labor's Mikell Fryer, and Susan Mayfield from the Health Department are some of the many resource leaders who will be participating in the Inaugural Diversity Forum on Saturday, January 17, beginning at 7:00 pm. WTVM will produce the live two-hour town hall meeting from the Studio Theater of the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts (Doors will be closed at 6:45pm). Issues that will be addressed are: Jobs and Employment; Education; Crime and Law Enforcement and Health. Judge John D. Allen will be presented the prestigious Community Excellence Award for his work in race relations and diversity and Hardaway senior Katie AliFarhani will receive the Richard R. Miles Youth award for similar efforts in her school and community.

This transformational splash is one of several new initiatives that are planed for One Columbus in 2009.

Tuesday, January 20 - First Presbyterian Dialogue Group

New Series on Racial History of Columbus begins

The dialogue group will meet Tuesday, January 20, and begin a series on the racial history of Columbus.  Johnnie C. Warner, Jr, president of the Columbus Black History Museum will lead the discussion.  Anyone in the community is welcome to come.

MLK UNITY MONTH

Each year, the Martin Luther King Steering Committee coordinates a community-wide celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King's vision expanded the intellectual and spiritual experience of being "fully human" in a diverse community.

The 2009 MLK Unity Celebration is an opportunity for community members of any faiths or ethnicity to come together and help bring this vision of Dr. King's to fruition through the many programs that are listed on the calendar.

Wednesday, January 28 - Race Relations Breakfast

Fife Whiteside, local attorney and former member of the Muscogee County School board will be the presenter for the eighth in the series "My Challenges with Race."  

The Race Relations Breakfasts are held at Ruth Ann's on Veterans Parkway. Breakfast begins at 7:25am and you are encouraged to bring a friend. $6.00 is asked of regular members.  First timers and visitors are our guests.
