Tuesday, March 24th  - First Presbyterian Dialogue Group

This dialogue group continues its investigation of probation services in Muscogee County. Mr. Tim Donovan, co-owner of Judicial Alternatives of Georgia explained how his company operates in Muscogee County. The group has set itself a March 31 date to determine what action, if appropriate, should be taken regarding this issue in our community.

 

The session begins at 6:30 pm in the Library of the First Presbyterian Church downtown.  Enter the church on First Avenue across from the CB&T parking garage between 11th and 12th Streets.

Thunder In The Valley Air Show is a not for profit Family Fun Event for the benefit of youth organizations in the Chattahoochee Valley area. Saturday, March 21 - "Super Saturday" for taxpayers

The IRS is spearheading a cross-functional campaign to promote March 21, 2009, as Super Saturday to get free tax help. Super Saturday is a nationwide effort designated as a day to provide extra service to taxpayers, particularly those who are experiencing difficulties during these stressful economic times.  We want to offer taxpayers help through the hundreds of venues, both in IRS offices, at partner sites across the country and online where they can get free tax assistance.  To find the locations of Taxpayer Assistance Centers please visit   http://www.irs.gov/localcontacts/  or call 1-800-829-1040.   Free File Tax Software is available on www.irs.gov  where taxpayers can select a company from the Free File Alliance.  This service is free for most taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $56,000 or less.

Saturday, March 21 - Free CPR offered by Red Cross

The American Red Cross West Central GA Chapter will offer free CPR training and certification in the following locations listed below.
In addition, the Red Cross will be traveling to surrounding counties to distribute materials including fire prevention and tornado safety.

March 21 - CPR training in Columbus, GA at CSU's Lumpkin Center and Brookstone School.  9:00am  11:30am  1:00pm  You must pre-register at 706-323-5614

Friday, March 27th - Seminar for employers who get money from Uncle Sam

The staff of the Atlanta office of Federal Contractor Compliance will present "Federal Employment Compliance Guidelines  -  What Employers Need To Know"

Employers doing business with the Federal government must comply with the laws and regulations requiring non-discrimination.  Employment opportunities generated by Federal dollars should be available to all Americans on an equitable and fair basis. 

The seminar spells out the details and runs from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Columbus Technical College Library, Room 600.

Wednesday, April 8 - Race Relations Breakfast to review "More Than Just Race"

In trying to describe why the poor stay poor, Harvard sociologist William Julius Wilson in his book "More Than Just Race," recaps 20 years of research done by himself and many of his peers to make a convincing case that both institutional and systemic impediments and cultural deficiencies keep poor blacks from escaping poverty and the ghetto.

A review of the book will be the program on Wednesday, April 8 at 7:25am's Race Relations Breakfast.  Tne main library has some copies, (call before going), but the book is available on Amazon.com.  

 The Race Relations Breakfasts are held at Ruth Ann's on Veterans Parkway. Breakfast begins at 7:25am. $6.00 is asked of regular members.  First timers and visitors are our guests.

Thursday, April 30  - Second Diversity Forum

Following the very successful Inaugural Diversity Forum, WTVM-TV announced that the second in the series will take place on Thursday, April 30, at 7:00pm at the RiverCenter.  You need to register now (name, telephone number and email address). at onecolumbus4@msn.com. Doors will be closed at 6:45 pm since this will be a live show.  Seating is limited.
